Hi creative souls! I’m Yasmine, creator of Sweet Madness, creative director & communication/branding consultant for music artists.
Maurice kindly invited me on his blog to share some interesting things with you guys! And I’m going to talk about Sync Licensing and how you can make money with it; how it helps you protect your music; how you can get more interesting opportunities and grow your fanbase. Ready?
But first, there’s a podcast available on this subject, if you tend more to be a listener than a reader ;-)

You are certainly wondering what Sync Licensing is?

And this is a good question! In short, it is a music license granted by the artist who holds the rights of a particular composition. This music license allows people to use the artist’s music for different visual mediums such as movies, TV shows, video games, etc.
Allowing people to use your music through Sync Licensing is like renting the rights to them for the use of your music. This generates passive income.
And this is not the only positive thing about it. It also helps you grow your fanbase. How? For instance, if your music is used in a TV show, it means that a specific audience will hear it. An audience you probably wouldn’t have been able to reach otherwise. It can also draw the attention of the media and of professionals of the music industry to you and your work which can lead to good opportunities.
Actually, Sync Licensing already helped some artists get a boost as Janine did when one of her songs was used in a show on VH1 a few years ago. (Janine is a singer, producer, and songwriter from New Zealand, currently based in Los Angeles and signed to Atlantic Records).

There’s something I often say: « Be flexible in your approach to your dreams ».

If you never thought of submitting your songs to be featured in movies or else, it may be the right time to do so.
Sync Licensing can be taken as an interesting option to advance towards your goals, no matter where you are in your career. Just be realistic.
But if you’re meeting a growing interest on and offline, don’t wait for too long before starting the process.
Here are a couple of other things you need to know before looking for Synchronization License:

There are two different kinds of copyright:

  • The composition copyright which protects the melody and lyrics, owned by the songwriter;
  • The sound recording copyright which protects the recording or master of the song, owned by the performing artist.

If you write and record your own songs, you will have two different copyrights for each song. You automatically get copyright protection and you are granted exclusive rights, every time you write or record a song. And when someone wants to use your music, he will need to get permission to use both copyrights.

As an independent artist, it is your role to make sure you have control over these rights and to take the necessary steps.

Know that there is no standard payment for sync licenses. The rates are negotiated on a case by case basis. It generally depends on your influence as an artist, your negotiator talent, on the budget of the production and how important it is for them to have your music.
For independent artists, sync deals are easier to negotiate than when there is more than one party involved. Because if one decides that he does not want to grant the license, there is nothing else to do.
You can license your music for free to get the exposure, but it is not recommended.

I am sure you are now wondering how can you do this?

My answer is the following:
You have two options, you can either :

  • take responsibility for your music and rights, do your own research & look for people to help you;
  • or look for a music publisher or publishing company to do it for you.

The final choice is yours. Both options are good as it depends on you.

Just listen to yourself and use your intuition in choosing the best way for you to take care of these things.
